Genetic Frequencies of Aldehyde Dehyrogenase 2 in the Patients with Alcohol Dependence and Normal Controls

Abstract
Objects:
@EN This study was designed to investigate the association of ALDH2 genetic types with the risk and clinical variables of alcohol dependence.
@ES Methods:
@EN ALDH2 genotypes were typed with restriction fragment length polymorphism method in 43 patients with alcohol dependence and in 27 normal controls. The frequencies of ALDH2 genetic types were compared between patients and controls. Among the
patients,
the frequencies of ALDH2 genotypes were compared in terms of clinical variables.
@ES Results:
@EN 1) Frequencies of the subjects with ALDH2*1/1 were higher and those with ALDH2*1/2 and ALDH2*2/2 were lower in patients than in controls.
2) The frequencies of the patients with ALDH2*1/1 and those with ALDH2*1/2 were related neither to family history of alcohol dependence not to Clininger's types.
3) There was no difference for the age of first drink between the patients with ALDH2*1/1 and those with ALDH2*1/2. The onset age of alcohol dependence was earlier in the patients with ALDH2*1/1 than in those with ALDH2*/1/2. The time span from
first
drink to onset tended to be shorter in patients with ALDH2*1/1 than in those with ALDH2*1/2.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN These results suggest ALDH2 genotypes might be associated with the risk and onset of alcohol dependence.
